The Centzon Huitznahua met their demise when they, and their sister Coyolxauhqui, after finding their mother Coatlicue pregnant, conspired to kill her. When her sons, the Centzon Huitznahua, (meaning ‘400 Southerners’), who were the gods of the stars, and daughter, Coyolxauhqui, a moon goddess, heard of their mother’s pregnancy, they were furious, and sought to kill her. Coatlicue was saddened by this, but the unborn Huitzilopochtli told her not to be afraid. Furious over her mother’s pregnancy, Coyolxauhqui and her four hundred star brothers (known as the Centzon Huitznahua) slew her but in the process, liberated their brother, Huitzilopochtli, who immediately sprang to action, dismembering Coyolxauhqui. Her corpse and severed remains tumbled down Coatepec, Snake Mountain. Thus, for instance, Tonatiuh was the god of sun and Metztli was the god of moon.
